August Max Metzler, 93, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012.. Born Jan. 7, 1919, Max was a 1937 graduate of Manual High School and a lifelong Indianapolis resident. He married Blanchalice “B.A.” Barrett on Oct. 23, 1942. She preceded him in death on Sept. 25, 1985.. Max served stateside in the U.S. Army during WWII, before settling in Pike Township. In 1946, his independent nature led him to start his own business, Metzler Home Maintenance, which soon became Metzler Plumbing.. Max was active in the community, joining the Pike Lions Club in 1956; he was their last living active charter member. He served as a trustee at Bethel United Methodist Church and participated in several of their mission trips with his current wife, Jane. Max was a longtime member of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors’ Association and served as president of the Indianapolis chapter in 1966-67.. Surviving are his wife Lena “Jane” Mertz Metzler; children Mickey (Ann), Russ (Judy), Chuck (Missy), Jim (Melanie), Gary (Maureen), Margo Moore (Tom), Larry (Dianne), Harry (Pam) and Paul (Cindy). He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.. Calling was Wednesday, March 15, at Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North. Services for Max were Thursday, March 15, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 5252 W. 52nd St., Indianapolis. Burial was in Bethel Cemetery..
