Barbara's Story

Barbara (Smith) McDowell, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on February 1, 2018. She was born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota. She attended public school and was a graduate of the University of North Dakota. Barbara graduated with a degree in Social Science. After graduation, she worked for Marion County in the Department of Childrens Division.
Barbara met her husband to be, Dr. Ralph McDowell, when the two were working summer jobs in Yellowstone National Park. The two married on July 1, 1949. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary this past July.
Barbara donated her time generously in support of Docent at IMA, Meals on Wheels, Boone County Senior Services, Shepherds Center, Zionsville Womens Club, Zionsville Garden Club, and Little Sisters of the Poor. Barbara had many interests including hosting family events, outdoors, travel, and gardening. She was especially skilled at creating dried flower arrangements. Her flower arrangements were seen by many at the Lilly House; Oldfields.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph, daughter, Ann (David) Bybee, and sons, Ralph, Jr. (Debbie) McDowell, and Bruce (Julie) McDowell; grandchildren, Morgan, Erin, Philip, and Abbie McDowell.
She was pre-deceased by her parents, Frank and Edna Smith, and brothers Robert, Richard, and Vincent.
A private service will be held.
