Betty J. Poorman died peacefully May 29, 2015, at Zionsville Meadows in Zionsville. She was 94. Born Jan.14, 1921, in Dunkirk, she was the only daughter of Edna and Herbie Shirk.. She was a graduate of Dunkirk High School and attended Ft. Wayne Business College in Fort Wayne.. She married Robert J. Poorman who preceded her in death in 1980.. Mrs. Poorman started her business career with her husband in Muncie when they opened the Muncie Bowling Center and later the Poorman and Associates Advertising Agency. In 1965, they started WERK Radio in Muncie. Then in 1984 Betty moved to Indianapolis to help her son with his broadcast properties, WXLW, WHHH, WBKS, and WYJZ and in addition WAV TV 53. In her later years, Mrs. Poorman helped in the healthcare field until the age of 90. She spent her last days at Zionsville Meadows surrounded by family and friends.. Betty was an active member of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and president of AARP. She was an avid bowler and loved the joy of living on the water.. Above all, she loved her family. She is survived by her children, William Shirk Poorman and wife, Liz, of Zionsville, and Becky Walstrom, of Indianapolis; grandchildren Robert J. Poorman, III (a.k.a. Robert Knight), Randall S. “Sean” Poorman, Maxine Shirk Poorman, Ryan James Walstrom and Joshua Daniel Walstrom; great-grandchildren, Kyra, Jaeden, Gunner, Sebastian, Patrick, and Jacob. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son, Robert J. “Sharky” Poorman.. Mrs. Poorman’s wishes were to be cremated and to have private family services. Myers Mortuary and Boone County Crematory, both of 1502 North Lebanon Street, Lebanon, Indiana have been entrusted to help with her wishes..
