He graduated from Macy High School in 1944, the FBI national Academy in 1966, was certified as a SCUBA instructor for the Indiana State Police, and graduated from IVY Tech as a licensed Real Estate Broker. He met the love of his life, Ruth Hammond, while stationed in San Francisco during WWII. They married on December 1, 1945. Over 70 years, the couple welcomed three children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren into their family.
Charles served as a radioman with the Navy in WWII from May, 1944 until June 1946. After returning home, Charles worked as a brakeman on the Nickel Plate railroad. After a brief retirement, Charles went back to work for the State of Indiana with the State Board of Health and the Department of Corrections. After a second brief retirement Charles worked at his hometown True Value hardware store until he turned 85.
Charles was an avid fisherman and was happiest sitting in a fishing boat catching northern pike at Little Moose Lake in northern Minnesota.
