David Russell Richards, 84, of Indianapolis, died Aug. 31, 2011. He was born in Birmingham, England, to the late Frederick H. and Doris (Gibbs) Richards on April 27, 1927.. David earned a bachelor’s degree from Oxford University and a graduate degree from the Institute of Political Science, Paris. He served in the Royal Navy, a branch of the British Armed Forces.. As a young man, David worked as a journalist for Reuters news agency in Paris. Upon emigrating to the United States, he worked in corporate communications for Eli Lilly & Co. for 24 years, followed by 10 years as vice president of corporate communications at Methodist Hospital.. During his retirement years, he wrote weekly book reviews for The Indianapolis Star. He was also a master gardner. In November 1981, David married Fran Watson who survives him.. In addition to his wife, David is survived by his children, Maryse Richards (Brandon Taylor) of Chicago; Michael Richards (Rita Brogan) of Seattle, Wash.; step-children Mark Watson, Carol (Bill) Cheesman, Kathryn Watson (Jeffrey Martin), Doug (Linda) Watson, David Watson, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.. A service was Tuesday, Sept. 6, at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry St., Zionsville. A reception immediately followed..
