Elaine Doris (Hirschy) McVay of Zionsville, Indiana passed peacefully on July 8, 2019. She was ninety six years old.

She was born on June 12, 1923 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of Arman Jonathan and Rose Kauffman Hirschy. They preceded her in death. She married Ronald R. McVay on October 24, 1943. Ronald served as a 1st Lieutenant with the Army's 89th Division in the European Theatre, serving in France. He was a graduate in engineering from Purdue University, and a Research and Development Engineer for United Technologies. He died on February 21, 1970.

Elaine attended the Indiana University School of Music and was a student in classical music under Dr. Mason Robinson. She served in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II as a stenographer. Her career included thirty years in piano pedagogy and as a church pianist and organist. She volunteered to do piano programs for numerous clubs, events, and recitals, including twelve years for the Zionsville Shepherds. She was also very active in local nonprofits, including as a member of the Friends of the Zionsville Library, where she served as President from 1998 to 1999. She proudly accompanied three of her great-grandchildren on the piano as they were awarded multiple Indiana State Music Association Solo Gold Medals, an award that she herself had won in the 1930s.

She loved spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and blankets for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, friends, and doing blankets for the Zionsville United Methodist Church's Quilter's Group.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Richard Steven McVay (wife Susan), her daughter Dr. Gloria Elaine (McVay) Cochran (husband Dr. Richard Cochran), and her youngest daughter, Dr. Karen Lynn (McVay) Wheeler (husband, Thomas E. Wheeler, II, J.D.). Her grandchildren, Scott R. McVay, Heather (McVay) Dolan, Matthew D. Cochran, J.D., Lauren McVay Cochran, J.D., Lieutenant Junior Grade Thomas E. Wheeler, III (USN), Jonathan Arman Wheeler third year medical student at Indiana University, and Michael L. Wheeler. She was preceded in death by her grandson Rory P. McVay. She was also the proud great grandmother to Edward Cochran, Xavier Dolan, Gavin Dolan, Thomas E. Wheeler, IV, James J. Wheeler, and their baby brother due in January.

A Memorial Service will be held at 9:30 am, Friday, July 26, 2019, at the Hoosier Village Chapel, 5385 Soapberry Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana. Her interment will take place at 3:00 pm, Friday, July 26, 2019, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 6600 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
