James "Jim" C. Mitchell, passed away peacefully on Oct. 11, 2017 in Indianapolis at the age of 89 after a brief illness.
A native of Ridgway and Clearfield and later Zionsville, Jim was a WWII veteran, stationed in Kobe, Japan. After his service, he attended Thiel College.
He began his career at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation before joining the Pennsylvania and Conrail Railroads, where he retired.
Jim was a member of the American Legion Post 79 in Zionsville and formerly of the American Legion Post 6, Eagles and VFW Post 1785 of Clearfield.
At the time of his passing, his family was by his side. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Margaret (Shaw) Mitchell of Zionsville; daughter, Debra Kline (George) of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, and daughter Diane Bakaysa (Brian) also of Zionsville.
Known as "Pappy Jim," he will be missed by his two cherished grandchildren, Katherine "Katie" Bakaysa and Nicholas "Nick" Bakaysa of Zionsville and the family dog, Maui, who brightened each of his days.
Everyone who met Jim was immediately taken by his charisma and sense of story-telling. An avid fan of football, he never missed a Penn State game, and enjoyed his Sunday afternoon watching the Steelers and the Colts.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton and Elsie Mae (Wilson) Mitchell, and a sister, Jeannine (Mitchell) Prindle, all from Ridgway.
