Russell W. Carter, 84, of Ancient Oaks, Okeechobee, Florida, died on Dec. 6, 2014, at the Hamrick Home Hospice of Okeechobee after a long, valiant, hard-fought battle with cancer.. He was born on Nov. 25, 1930, to Paul Carson and Sylvia Cleora Mayfield Carter in Zionsville. In 1949 Russell graduated from Zionsville Community High School. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 to 1952.. Russell played semi-pro baseball, and he operated Carter Van Lines with his father and brother. He also worked at Cypress Gardens, Florida, as a water ski professional; competed throughout the country; and helped his oldest son operate a world-renowned water ski school in Fort Lauderdale. Later in life, Russell took on the sport of tennis and became a USPTA tennis coach and teacher. He taught and played tennis throughout Palm Beach County and had a great group of junior tennis students in Wellington, Florida.. Russell is survived by his longtime companion, Janis Cowan, of Okeechobee; sons, Rusty (Mariella) Carter Jr., of Plantation, Florida, and Robin (Karen) Carter, of Danville, Indiana; daughter, Paula Jean Macke, of Pearl River, Louisiana; six grandsons; one granddaughter; and six great-grandchildren..
