Ashley's Story

Text size

Ashley Crawford Thompson, 28, of Zionsville, died on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.. Ashley, was born Dec. 11, 1982, in Indianapolis , the “gift of a lifetime” to her parents, Kent J. and Loretta “Retzy” (Crawford) Thompson.. Ashley graduated with the Zionsville Community High School Class of 2001 and was class president. She graduated in 2005 from Xavier University, where she majored in communications and public relations. She was public relations director for the Florence Freedom baseball team in Florence, Ky.. Ashley will always be remembered by those who knew and loved her as a woman of great energy, determination, courage and loyalty. She was a free spirit, a “beautiful soul” who embraced life and knew no strangers. She was called a “friend to the end;” there was no limit to what she would do for you if you were her friend. Even when she was ill and facing surgery or treatment, she would fly or drive to the aid of a friend in need of her support. Her humor and courage in the face of illness were an inspiration to all who knew her.. Ashley and her family were blessed with many faithful friends, without whom they could not have gotten through the challenges of the past years. Dr. Charles F. Hasbrook was there when Ashley took her first breath in 1982, directed her medical care throughout her journey, and was with Ashley’s family the day she took her last breath. He was, the family says, “Ashley’s lifeline, a God-send who literally held our hands throughout Ashley’s illness.”. The family would also like to thank their Terre Haute friends Dr. Gayland D. Jones, wife Suzy, and family; Dr. Howard C. Ray and wife Traci; and Retzy’s “Schulte Angels,” who were spiritual guides of love and encouragement. Also instrumental in this journey were treasured friends Steve and Sherri Taylor and Jim Arthur. They are grateful to the countless friends and neighbors who opened their lives and hearts to them. To all who have truly lifted up the family, showering them with love, grace, and hope while lighting the way through Ashley’s journey, the family wishes to express their unending gratitude.. Ashley is survived by her parents, Kent J. and Loretta “Retzy” Thompson; her aunts Patti Crawford and Jan Thompson; her uncles Hugh Crawford, Jim Acton, and Daryl and Gale Thompson; her cousins John, Jason and Jack Acton, Greta Crawford, Kaymie Owen, Tim and Michael Thompson and Kimberly, Kyle and Shelby Crawford; and Retzy’s sister of the heart, Jeanine Arthur.. Ashley was preceded in death and welcomed into eternal peace by her grandparents Frank P. and Margaret Green Crawford; Wayne L. and Emily A. (Evers) Thompson; beloved aunts Judy A. (Thompson) Acton and Margaret “Sissy” Crawford; and uncle Frank P. Crawford, Jr.. A celebration of life, was on Friday, Oct. 28, at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church. Inurnment followed at Zionsville Cemetery.. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Humane Society or donor’s charity of choice..
