Carolyn Elizabeth “Betty” Brokaw, 89, of Indianapolis, formerly of Zionsville and Cincinnati, died on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.. She was born in Evansville on Sept. 17, 1922, to the late Robert and Edythe (Seiler) Farmer. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, James Edward Brokaw, on Nov. 7, 2011.. She graduated from the Deaconess School of Nursing in Evansville in 1946. She married James Brokaw on July 1, 1951.. Betty was proud to be a “stay-at-home” mom during her children’s early years, but returned to work as a nurse at Hoosier Village Nursing Home in Zionsville in the late 60s; then at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis and finally concluding her career at Bethesda North Hospital in suburban Cincinnati. She retired in the early 1980s and enjoyed traveling with her husband to Elderhostel programs throughout the United States.. Betty also enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, needlework and gardening; her quilts warm the beds of her newlywed and college-aged grandchildren across the country. She was always happiest in the company of her husband, children and grandchildren.. Betty was a former member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Montgomery, Ohio, and St. Christopher Episcopal Church in Carmel. She was most recently a member of St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church in Zionsville.. She is survived by her children: Susan (Dirk Wonnell) Brokaw, Steven (Stephanie) Brokaw, Robert (Jill) Brokaw, David (Christine) Brokaw, and Carol Brokaw Brightwell; nine grandchildren: Luke (Lauren) Wonnell, Clay Wonnell, Keith Brokaw, David Brokaw, Grant Brokaw, Mattie Brokaw, James Brokaw, John Brokaw and Tyler Brightwell.. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 11, at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry St., Zionsville..
