Hugh's Story

Hugh J. Baker III, born Aug. 7, 1944, was sitting with his men's Bible Study Fellowship Leaders on Saturday morning, Feb. 14, when God took him Home.. A champion, cheerleader and crusader for Christ, he exemplified servant leadership in every facet of his life, first to his God, then to his family and to all of his work. He began as purchasing manager for his grandfather's steel business, Hugh J. Baker & Co., and finished as the regional advancement director for Rose Hulman Institute of Technology.. Hugh embodied energy, optimism and lots of humor. He was a veteran of Vietnam, serving as a Navy Seabee. He served on many boards, including the Indianapolis Rotary (past president), FBI Citizens Academy, Stanley K Lacy Leadership, Indianapolis Symphony, Junior Achievement, PMMI, Indiana Youth Institute, American Red Cross (past member of the Board of Governors). His family and friends will remember "Mr. Indy" at IMS standing in the south chute as an observer.. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Priscilla Baker (Hash); sons, Hugh Jacob IV (Lisa), Hiram Judson (Cary); and grandchildren, Cole, Caleb, Isabel, Judson, Lillie and Maddie.. Hugh was predeceased by his parents, Hugh Jr. and Dorothy, and a sister, Sue Spooner.. Calling was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday Feb. 20, at Traders Point Christian Church, 6590 S. Indianapolis Road, Whitestown, with additional calling from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday. A funeral service immediately followed at 10 a.m. Private burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery..
