Michael's Story

Michael Joseph DiGiacomo, 71, formerly of Zionsville, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012 in Efland, N.C.. Mike was born in Wooster, Ohio, on Nov. 26, 1940, the son of the late Henry DiGiacomo and Angelina (Rose) DiGiacomo.. Mike attended Wayne Elementary School as well as Wooster High School prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy where he served for four years.. Mike was preceded in death by his father Henry DiGiacomo, stepfather Louis Ghirardelli, mother Angelina ( Rose, DiGiacomo ) Ghirardelli, brother Launie Ghirardelli, sister Corrine DiGiacomo Stroud and his infant son, Michael Joseph DiGiacomo Jr.. Mike is survived by his long-time companion, Mary Cheetham; sons, Jim of Indiana; Tony (Tracey) of Cape Coral, Fla.; and Nick (Leslie) of Wooster, Ohio; daughters, Michelle (Conway) Kelly of Tallahassee Fla.; Antoinette (Ruddy) Edwards of Efland, N.C.; granddaughters Amber, Annie, Brandi, Brittany, Nichole, Cheyenne and Zoe; grandsons, Chip, Danny, Anthony, Nikko, Victor and Noah; six great-grandchildren, 10 nieces and nephews, numerous great-nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.. Mike worked in many auto body repair shops in Ohio and Indiana before opening his own auto body shop with his former wife, Susie, in Zionsville, called Zionsville Auto Body. They later added Minuteman Towing and Recovery Service.. In 1984 Mike moved his family to Fort Myers, Fla., where he became a licensed charter boat captain. The first boat he and Susie owned and operated was the “High Sierra.” The second, larger boat they owned and operated as a charter fishing boat was the “Damnifino.” He also operated the “Lady Chesapeake” with his companion Mary.. Fishing was a passion of Mike’s. His favorite place was at the  Roosevelt Reef off the shore of Fort Myers Beach, where his ashes will be spread and he will be “set free.” Mike passed this great love of fishing on to his family and all will remember him “every time we drop that line into the water.”
