Thomas Yonatana Yuma, born on Feb. 2, 1952, in Yei, South Sudan, and a resident of Indianapolis since 1997, passed away in the early morning of Friday, Jan. 9, 2015. He had courageously battled cancer for several years while looking after his family and remaining a dedicated witness to his Christian faith.. A member of the Bari tribe and Kakwa subtribe, Yuma was the son of a missionary teacher and was one of three sons and four daughters. He received his early education in Sudan before attending high school in Nairobi, Kenya. Due to regional wars, he spent considerable time in refugee camps, moving first to Uganda then to Sierre Leone, where he attended college and studied economics. He later moved to Liberia, where he continued his education, taught middle and high school mathematics, and served as the school principal.. In 1995, Yuma came to the United States through a refugee resettlement program. He resided in Seattle, Washington, before moving to Zionsville in 1997. In 2007 he married Stella Nujaka Gore, also of South Sudan, and in 2009 the Yumas became the proud parents of a son, Shadrack.. Yuma earned a degree in computer sciences from Ivy Tech and a Bachelor of Science degree in information technology from Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. He held various positions in the information services field and also worked part time at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, Zionsville, where he and his family were well-loved members.. A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, Jan. 17, at St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry St. Visitation begins at 10 a.m., prayers and closing of the casket will occur at 11 a.m., with visitation continuing until 11:45 a.m.. Contributions to defray the cost of the service and burial can be made to St. Francis In-The-Fields Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry St., Zionsville, IN 46077..
