Zionsville's Story

Jerome “Jerry” Julius Kinzel, 62, of Zionsville, passed Aug. 26, 2014.. Jerry received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, and worked as a scientist at Eli Lilly and Co., Indianapolis, for 24 years, where he rose to the position of general manager and president of ImClone Systems. Jerry was a key architect of Lilly’s biotechnology pipeline, and this work has led to new medicines and potential medicines in cancer, diabetes, autoimmune diseases and Alzheimer’s that will ultimately impact millions of people’s lives around the world.. His can-do attitude was infectious and served the group well through difficult challenges. While serving as a technical leader he also took the time to meet regularly with employees to discuss their ideas and concerns. Many wonderful stories are told about the time he showed special attention to an employee’s situation. His colleagues will greatly miss him but will also celebrate his legacy and strive to build upon that work for the benefit of mankind.. In addition to his work, Jerry enjoyed many activities including astronomy, photography, traveling, playing with family pets, and home brewing. His greatest passion in life was his family, whom he loved dearly.. Jerry is survived by his wife, Kathleen P. Kinzel; children, Jennifer M. (James) Kinzel, Timothy A. (Emily) Kinzel, and Eric C. Kinzel. He is also survived by his first grandchild, Victoria M. Kleinschmidt.. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Virgelia Kinzel.. Visitation was Sept. 4, 2014, and services were held Sept. 5, 2014, at St. Alphonsus Liguori Catholic Church, 1870 W. Oak St. Burial followed at Zionsville Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Jerry’s honor may be made to the Assistance League of Indianapolis or the American Heart Association..
