Ruth M. Burrus
Ruth M. Burrus, 93, May 28, 1926 - Nov. 28, 2019

Ruth was born to Ervin A. Kettring and Erma F. (Cocanower) Kettring of New Carlisle, Indiana. She graduated from New Carlisle High School and Valparaiso University. She married Otis C. Burrus in 1948. She taught school in DeMotte and Wheeler, Indiana before moving to Zionsville in 1952.

Before starting her family, Ruth worked a few years at Pittman Moore Company. Later, she worked as a bookkeeper and as a substitute teacher, but her passion was serving her family and others. As a member of Zionsville Christian Church, she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and served as an elder. She was president of the Christian Women's Fellowship and chaired many committees. Ruth became the first female president of the church governing board. For over thirty years, she led the church Hug-a-Pillow ministry for hospitalized children, making thousands of pillows for children.

Ruth was a tireless supporter of the Indiana Extension Homemakers Association. She started in 4-H as a child, she eventually became a 4-H leader and in Zionsville served as president of both the Village Homemakers and the Boone County Extension homemakers. She served as treasurer of the Indiana statewide organization. She enjoyed competing at the Boone County and Indiana State Fairs, winning dozens of grand championships in gardening, baking, and sewing.

Ruth chaired the Boone County Easter Seal campaign. She was a member of Delta Sigma Kappa sorority and the Zionsville Better Homes & Hobbies Club. She belonged to the State Assembly Women's Club and chaired the Boone County Advisory Board for Family Service of Central Indiana (now Families First). In 1971, the Zionsville Jaycees recognized Ruth as Woman of the Year. She received the Zionsville Town Crier award in 1983 and the Boone County 4-H alumni award in 1985.

Ruth and Otis enjoyed traveling, mostly fishing trips to the Florida Keys, Belize and Mexico. They toured Europe, Africa, Australia and Alaska. At age 80, Ruth parasailed above the Gulf of Mexico.

Ruth is survived by sister, Jean Nawrocki, of Minneapolis, brother, Albert Dale (Doris) Kettring, Rolling Prairie, IN, three sons: Rex (Julie), of Lansing, IL, Roger (Danielle), of Zionsville, and Max (Cheryl), of Willow Spring, NC, seven grandchildren: Alex, Nicole, Andrew (Courtney), Christopher, Nicholas, Abagail and CJ, and two great grandchildren, Luke and Drew.
